Bowel resection surgery
Colectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing or total or partial resection of the large intestine (colon). Bowel resection is indicated in cases of cancer, diverticulitis, bowel obstruction, ulcerative colitis, traumatic injury or polyps. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and can be open or minimally invasive by laparoscopy. The operation involves making an incision in the abdomen and remove the diseased part of the colon. Then the surgeon stitches the two healthy ends of the intestine and closes the cut. If after removing the intestine can not continue their digestive function, it is possible that the specialist must take one end of the colon through the abdominal wall and attach to it. This technique is known as colostomy. In addition, the skin will be set at a drainage bag where feces are deposited, a device can be permanent or temporary. Full recovery from this surgery can be achieved after two months.
